Overview of Weird Buildings in China

Recently, my social media has been sharing travel photos, which makes my heart itch.

Back in the day, I was also a backpacker who traveled far and wide, seeing many famous mountains and rivers, as well as some bizarre buildings and designs. After reading them, it really made me doubt my life!

These buildings, some with peculiar shapes, some with unclear meanings, and some controversial due to scale issues, have all become a “beautiful scenery” in the local area.

Today, let’s take a look at those wonderful buildings that we have “roast” together over the years.

The “Spicy Eyes” Love on the Cliff - Chongqing Wulong’s “Flying Kiss”

To talk about bizarre architecture, the “Flying Kiss” in Wulong, Chongqing must have a name.

Imagine climbing mountains and wading through water, finally reaching the top of the mountain, ready to admire the small mountains. What catches your eye is two giant statues dressed in “couple costumes”, gazing affectionately at each other on the edge of the cliff. Isn’t this scene a bit too exciting?

These two statues, one is a man wearing armor and the other is a woman wearing ribbons, are said to be based on local folklore and symbolize “sweet love”.

However, this design is a bit difficult to describe.

Not to mention whether the proportion is coordinated, just this posture is enough to make people imagine.

Many netizens roast that it was “sweet love”. Why do I feel a bit hot?

Leaving aside its appearance, the geographical location of the “Flying Kiss” is also making people sweat.

These two behemoths stand on the edge of the cliff, and I always feel like I’m about to “sacrifice myself” in the next second. Is this safety factor really okay?

Of course, there are also many people who think that although the “Flying Kiss” looks a bit bizarre, it can still be considered a local characteristic landscape. After all, in this era where “traffic is king”, as long as it can attract attention, it is considered successful.

The “Night Pot” Original Pot - Liuzhou “Big Night Pot” Commercial Center

If the ‘Kiss of the Flying Sky’ is a spicy eye, then the ‘Big Night Pot’ commercial center in Liuzhou is a laughingstock.

This building, from a distance, looks like a giant night pot. Its shape is so hard to remember!

It is said that the designer originally intended to create the image of a carp leaping over the dragon gate, symbolizing auspiciousness and harmony.

As a result, the ideal is very fulfilling, and the reality is very fragile. Before this “carp” could leap over the dragon gate, it became a joke among netizens after dinner.

It has to be said that the design of this “big night teapot” is so deeply ingrained in people’s hearts that many people come to Liuzhou to check in and take photos, which can be considered as off the beaten track.

However, this also reminds designers that when designing, they still need to consider the public’s aesthetics more, after all, not all “art” can be understood.

Lucky Three Brothers - Three Star Tower of “Fortune, Fortune, Longevity” in Hebei Province

The “Fortune, Fortune, and Longevity” three-star building in Hebei sounds quite auspicious, but when I looked at the photo, I almost didn’t see it off.

These three buildings are just like three fat old men. I’m really powerless to complain about the beauty.

It is said that the design concept of these three buildings is the “Three Stars of Fortune, Fortune, and Longevity” shining high, symbolizing good luck and prosperity.

However, this design is too concrete, with no room for imagination, and the proportions are also a bit out of proportion. It looks top heavy and light, and I always feel like it’s about to collapse in the next second.

What’s even more baffling is that the colors of these three buildings are particularly bright, red, green, and green, resembling the rural style of the Kill Mart, which is out of place with the surrounding environment.

Buddha jumps over the wall is also crazy — Shandong “Buddha jumps over the wall” hotpot city

What’s more, there was once a “Buddha jumps over the wall” hotpot city in Shandong. Guess what, people directly stripped the Buddha statue!

This idea, I can only say, boss, you really dare to think about it!

This building, from a distance, looks like a huge Buddha statue. However, this Buddha statue is only wearing a pair of shorts, with its upper body completely exposed. Moreover, its expression is particularly enchanting, as if it is saying, “Come and eat me

This is too disrespectful!

Later, this building was demolished due to its impact on the city’s appearance, and it deserved it!

The Office Building in a Wine Bottle - Yibin Wuliangye Building

Of course, not all bizarre buildings are so stunning. Some are quite interesting, such as the “Wuliangye” building in Yibin. From a distance, it looks like a huge wine bottle, both an advertisement and an office building. I give this operation full marks!

The design of this building can be said to have taken the “wine culture” to the extreme.

From a distance, it looks like a huge bottle of Wuliangye liquor, with the three big characters “Wuliangye” printed on the bottle. The advertising effect is impressive!

Moreover, the design of this building is also very practical, with spacious and bright interior space and comfortable office environment. It is said that employees of Wuliangye enjoy working in this building.

Attracting Wealth and Wealth with Chinese Cabbage - Shandong’s Giant ‘Chinese Cabbage’

The giant sculpture of “Chinese cabbage” in Shandong, although it looks a bit rustic, is quite in line with local characteristics, after all, Shandong is a vegetable province!

Moreover, cabbage also has the meaning of “attracting wealth and prosperity”, which can be considered a good omen!

This giant sculpture of “Chinese cabbage” is located in Shouguang City, Shandong Province and is a famous local attraction.

This sculpture, 12 meters high and 8 meters in diameter, is constructed of reinforced concrete and painted with green paint, giving it a lifelike appearance.

Although the shape of this sculpture is a bit simple and rough, it is very in line with the local aesthetic. Moreover, in traditional Chinese culture, cabbage also symbolizes “attracting wealth and prosperity”, so this sculpture has become the “mascot” of the local people.

Along the way, I have discovered that some of these bizarre buildings are design errors, some are sensationalism, but there are also some that are products of the times and culture.

They reflect the customs and traditions of different regions, and also record the development process of Chinese architectural design.

Although bizarre, there are also bizarre truths.
